The Virtual Fellow in Maternal-Fetal Medicine responds to obstetricians' need for advanced training in maternal-fetal care.

The training consists of a first theoretical-practical part and a second practical part.

The theoretical-practical part includes online training through modules for the acquisition of basic and advanced knowledge in maternal-fetal medicine. This part is supported by an interactive platform consisting of discussion forums and Masterclasses given by experts in the field. It also includes practicums to be completed by the student for each module.

The postgraduate course includes a face-to-face period in Barcelona. During this period there will be Meet the Professor classes, clinical cases, invasive techniques and simulations. It is possible to obtain a postgraduate degree from the University of Barcelona (see "certificates" section).

    Who is the target audience?

Gynecology and obstetrics specialists with a minimum of experience in maternal-fetal medicine who wish to take a high-level refresher course to qualify them for their daily practice and who have limited time available.

    Overall objective

To carry out a high-level theoretical and practical update in maternal-fetal medicine in an international reference center.

Course details

Course structure, schedule and content

Teaching structure

The teaching program includes 6 theoretical modules that cover almost all current fetal pathology and offer advanced training through theoretical classes and an interactive platform.

Each module allows the online viewing of videos with the theoretical contents of the modules. These modules will have a determined duration and will be carried out sequentially.

The theoretical evaluation will be done online, once the Masterclass session has been completed and any doubts that students may have have have been resolved, and the exam will be a multiple-choice test with questions that may include images and videos, with specific dates for completion.

Masterclass

Masterclasses will be scheduled with the tutor of each module in Zoom format where students will be able to ask live online questions to the experts. They will be coordinated by a moderator who will facilitate their development. The session will be held before the end of the online exam period to resolve any doubts that students may have.

Practicum

All modules include a practical part that consists of obtaining and sending a certain number of images* that must follow the criteria established in the theoretical classes.

These will be evaluated and scored by the Academic Committee of the course so that students will receive personalized feedback that will allow them to detect possible errors in order to improve technically and improve their healthcare practice.

This part requires dedication on the part of the student and is aimed at improving the performance of ultrasound scans in their daily healthcare activity. In some modules it is also required the submission of documented clinical cases, obtained by the student himself at his workplace, with their associated images.

Online Clinical Case Resolution

A forum will be created using the Moodle platform for each module. This will be supervised by the scientific coordinator of the course who will ensure its correct functioning.

It will be made available to the students at the beginning of the module and will represent a space to share concerns and doubts in relation to the topics to be covered. Likewise, the module directors will present some clinical cases to the students to generate debate.

On-site part

The on-site period consists of two weeks in Barcelona. From November 6 to November 17, 2023 from Monday to Friday and includes:

  • Meet the professor" sessions in which students can personally discuss the most relevant aspects of each module with professors who are experts in that area of knowledge.
  • Practical workshops on invasive techniques: These are carried out with simulators guided by experts in invasive techniques.
  • Simulations: Its main objective is to improve the training of healthcare professionals in the obstetric field and in various areas of pediatrics. Different maternal-fetal pathology scenarios based on previously learned knowledge will be developed through advanced simulation. Simulation helps to improve safety and clinical outcomes as it allows professionals to plan and practice a large number of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions without the need to involve patients. There is sufficient scientific evidence to affirm that the use of simulation can help reduce morbidity and mortality by 20%.
  • Clinical case sessions in groups of 10-12 people where some example clinical cases will be solved and the knowledge acquired during the various modules will be put into practice. Participants will be asked to present their own clinical cases and they will be discussed in groups, supervised by an expert.

Final review paper - research

The Postgraduate training includes the completion of a final research work that will be evaluated by the committee of experts. There are 2 possibilities:

  •  Systematic literature review of a current topic covered during the postgraduate course.
  •  Original research in your own environment.

The topic of the paper will be proposed by each student. The proposals must be sent before February 20, 2023 to the scientific coordinator of the course so that they can be evaluated by the Scientific Committee and their suitability can be assessed. The Scientific Committee will establish the final topic for each student and a tutor will be assigned to each student to advise him/her during the realization of the work.

  •  The course is accredited by the University of Barcelona. They will also be awarded with their own degree* of "Postgraduate in Maternal-Fetal Medicine" with 37 ECTS credits and issued by the Institut de Formació Continuada (IL3) of the University of Barcelona*.
University of Barcelona

*What is a University degree?

The University of Barcelona's own degree courses are designed for the specialization and in-depth study of practicing professionals.

What is the difference between proprietary degrees and university degrees?

In accordance with article 2, section g) of Organic Law 6/2001, of December 21, 2001, on Universities, the State grants Spanish universities the autonomy to "issue official degrees that are valid throughout the national territory and their own diplomas and degrees". Official degrees require a series of procedures and evaluations by different public bodies such as the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) and are necessary to obtain a doctorate. The proper degrees are specialized teachings with different names (master's, postgraduate, expert, etc.) and do not require validation by institutions such as ANECA. They are designed to respond in an agile way to the needs posed by the labor market and society, so they are aimed at achieving objectives such as:

  •  To provide specialized training with immediate professional projection.
  •  To update the knowledge of professionals in order to promote training for professional practice.
  •  Establish a connection between academic activity and social reality (an objective endorsed by the frequent organization of degrees offered through agreements with public institutions and private companies).

What is not a specific university degree?

  • It is not a preliminary stage for access to a doctoral program. In special circumstances, the degree could be used for these purposes in accordance with the legislation of each country, but this is not its main purpose. This postgraduate degree requires the completion of a research paper, with the main purpose of acquiring skills in the interpretation of research literature. In some individual cases, this work may be original research, and may even trigger a publication or the continuation of a research career after completion of the course. However, this is not the main objective of the Postgraduate Course in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, so it should not be considered formal training in maternal-fetal medicine research.
  • This Postgraduate course does not qualify for professional practice regardless of the local regulations of each country. For this reason, only specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology can be accepted. In some specific countries, this type of activity could later be used to accredit or obtain an additional national degree in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, but this will always depend on local regulations and is not an automatic feature of this degree at all.

What is the validity of my own degree outside Spain?

A course with its own degree has the same validity inside and outside Spain, since it is a curricular title of non-regulated studies approved by the university councils, and protected by the Organic Law of Universities, which accredits the continuous training of the student.

Requirements for obtaining the certificate

To obtain the Certificate, the student must meet the following conditions:

  •  Attendance at 80% of the face-to-face part of the course.
  •  Pass each module separately, both the online part and the practicum.
  •  Participate in the forums.
  •  Approve the final paper.
