- General information
Fetal cardiology is a defined subspecialty within fetal medicine. It requires a high degree of knowledge of fetal cardiac anatomy and circulation, and a mastery of techniques for the visualization of cardiac structure and functionalism throughout the three trimesters of gestation. It is also necessary to have a deep knowledge of the possible intrauterine evolution, of the associated pathologies and of course of the prognosis of the different cardiac malformations. Fetal cardiology defines a new field of knowledge clearly supra-disciplinary in which it is necessary to combine original knowledge of fetal medicine and pediatric cardiology. Although it is essential for an advanced unit to have both types of specialists, it is essential that all members have detailed knowledge of aspects of the other specialty in order to offer the patient the best medicine available.
This course is aimed at fetal medicine specialists with an advanced level of echocardiography, or pediatric cardiologists with interest and/or practice in fetal medicine. The course is focused on the diagnosis and advanced orientation of these pathologies, which implies a mastery of 2D and Doppler fetal echocardiography techniques. However, it contemplates in depth essential aspects for an adequate practice of fetal cardiology, and therefore a relevant time is dedicated to discuss aspects of postnatal prognosis and different techniques of surgical correction. This provides the specialist with the necessary knowledge that allows him/her to adequately guide the complementary study and advice to parents, aspects as relevant as prognosis.
